The deceased were identified as Rithubala, wife of Selvam (30) and resident of Senkuttai near Katpadi, and their son Ateesh. The incident occurred at about 2 am on Thursday. The neighbours of the couple stormed out of their houses, on hearing Rithubala’s scream, and were shocked to see the young woman in flames. As they couldn’t save her, they rushed her child and husband to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital (GVMCH). While the child succumbed to burn injuries, Selvam is under treatment. On information, police rushed and recovered the body of Rithubala and sent it to the GVMCH for autopsy and registered a case and commenced their investigation. Inquiries revealed that the couple were married for two years. Rithubala was working in a private hospital here. They frequently fought as Selvam had stopped going to work for more than six months.
Selvam reportedly told the police that his wife attempted suicide and he tried to save her and in the process got injured. Meanwhile, Rithubala’s father Munusamy filed a complaint with the police suspecting foul play in his daughter and grandson’s death. He alleged that his son-in-law would have set his daughter ablaze while she was sleeping.
The police forwarded the case to Revenue Divisional Officer Vasanthi for an SDM inquest. Based on the inquest report of the RDO, the Deputy Superintendent of Police would decide on further course of action .
