Shameel Ahmed case
handed over to CBCID
J Shanmugha Sundaram
Police officials said that the Inspector of Pallikonda Station, C Martin Premraj, was placed under suspension on Sunday following orders from DGP Ashok Kumar.
Relatives of Ahmed claim he died due to injuries sustained while in illegal detention. The youth was allegedly detained in the quarters allocated to Inspector Premraj between June 15 and 19.
Ahmed’s family members handed him over to Pallikonda police after relatives of 23 year-old Pavithra, wife of Palani of Pallikonda, (who went missing on June 13 and continues to remain untraceable), picked up a quarrel with Ahmed’s relatives demanding her whereabouts. Pavithra and Ahmed had reportedly developed an illicit affair when they were working together in a private company in Pallikonda.
“We handed over Ahmed to the Pallikonda police at 11 am on June 15 to help solve the case. But, the police tied him and beat him up very badly. He died on Sunday due to complications and injuries sustained while in police custody,” said N.K. Mohammed Ghouse, his father-in-law.
The death of the youth sparked a major protest in Ambur Town on Saturda, which turned violent with protestors setting fire to police vehicles, a TASMAC outlet and ransacking private hospitals. They pelted stones and attacked police personnel with deadly weapons.
50 INL cadre held
District police on Monday arrested 50 cadre of the Indian National League (INL) for attempting to surround the District Police Office (DPO) while condemning the death of Shameel Ahmed.
The district police beefed up security in and around DPO following the INL protest. Police stationed riot control vehicles with water cannon and deployed striking force to avert any untoward incidents.
The functionaries of INL raised slogans. But they were picked up by the police and the arrested men were led by INL’s state president ‘Tada’ J Abdul Rahim.
Rahim said the police had failed to act appropriately to avert the clash. He also demanded that the government extend financial aid to Shameel Ahmed’s family.
