Vellore:
It was a scene straight from a movie when a youth pushed aside his brother, the groom, who was about the get married, and tied the knot to the bride at the wedding ceremony in a temple near Tirupattur on Thursday.
The shocked relatives of the bride and groom assaulted the youth, Vinod, for his irrational action. They were surprised when the youth and the bride revealed that they were in love ever since they saw each other at the betrothal of the girl with Vinod’s elder brother Rajesh six months ago. They kept their relationship secretly till the last minute of the marriage. Vexed over this, Vinod’s brother Rajesh torn his shirt and thrown the Thali and took to his heels from the spot.
Kamaraj, a native of Chellarapatti village near Tirupattur, and his family fixed the marriage of his second son Rajesh with Kaleeshwari of Rajapalayam six months ago. The marriage was scheduled between 7.30 am and 9 am on June 1 in Bala Murugan temple at Thirukalgundram near Chellarapatti village. The bride, her family members and relatives reached Tirupattur a couple of days ago for the ceremony, said the sources.  Rajesh and Vinod were working in garments and they were not in good terms.
On the eve of the marriage, the families of bride and groom conducted all the rituals.   The bride remained calm, while Vinod was busy with marriage arrangement. They reached the temple early morning on Thursday for the wedding ceremony. Everything went as planned. “As per the rituals, thali (sacred thread) was taken around to get the blessing of the elders came for the wedding. After getting the blessings of the elders, Thali was handed over to the groom. When the priest finished the mantra and asked Rajesh to tie the sacred thread, Vinod pushed him from manamedai (pedestal). Taking everyone by surprise, he took Thali from his pocket that he was carrying discreetly and tied to the bride,” said a source.
Angered over this, the relatives and family members beaten Vinod for his act. They were also surprise to see the girl remained calm without getting agitated. Vinod told the relatives and elders who came to the marriage that he and Kaleeshwari were in love. The girl also acknowledged it. It was love at first sight for them. Since they met at the engagement six months ago, they liked each other and fell in love soon. They were speaking over phone.
The relatives learnt that Vinod and Kaleeshwari decided to wait till the last minute and executed their plan. Infuriated over this, Vinod’s brother torn his shirt and threw the Thali in his hand and ran from the spot, weeping.
After an hour of consolation and talk, the elders blessed Vinod and his lover turned-wife. They left for the girl’s place later on the day./eom/shan/
