VELLORE: Eight persons, including a minor, were arrested on Saturday on charges of gang-raping a 19-year-old married girl in Vallimalai hills near Vellore. The victim has a two-year-old daughter and was living with her parents after separating from her husband of three years, eight months ago.
According to police, the girl was reportedly involved in an extramarital relationship with her neighbour Praveen Kumar (21).
On Friday afternoon, the youth took her to an isolated spot on the Vallimallai hills where the gang raped her for three hours between noon and 3 pm and also allegedly filmed the act.
“Preliminary enquiry and the statements of the accused revealed that Kumar and his friends had planned the act. They had also decided to kill the girl if she refused to co-operate,” a police officer said. Praveen then dropped the battered girl in Arcot town and sped away.
Seeing the semi-conscious girl, passers-by took her to the Government Hospital in Arcot where she told doctors that she had been gang-raped. The doctors alerted the police, who in turn, registered a case and picked up the eight accused — S Praveen Kumar (21), R Ananth (21), K Hema Kumar (22), G Mohan (18), K Sathish (20), K Saravanan (19), A Sathish (20) and a 17-year-old juvenile — for enquiry. Superintendent of Police P K Senthil Kumari and assistant director of forensic wing K Pari visited the crime spot and gathered evidence. “We collected five used condoms, broken pieces of bangles and the girl’s purse from the spot. The condoms will be sent to a forensic lab in Chennai for DNA testing,” SP Senthil Kumari told Express. Police also seized four cellphones, including the one used to film the rape, and a bike.
